The title of this section of Scripture is “A discussion about fasting.” I am not sure the title is all that correct. Jesus answers the question on fasting, but then moves on to new and old garments and new and old wineskins.
I think a better title would be “A discussion about seasons.”
1. Recognise seasons
Luke 12:55-56 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?
There is a time when the Groom is here. There is a season when He is not.
We all have seasons in our lives. You don’t act he same way in each season. There are seasons where you fast, and seasons where you feast. Neither is better than the other. It depends on the season.
2. There are new seasons
There is a time for new.
Enjoy the season you are in. Don’t wreck the season by cutting it up and sewing it onto the old. That’s just dumb.
It’s time to wear a new dress. Enjoy it. Don’t feel guilty. Enjoy the season.
When you enter a new season don’t try incorporate the new with the old.
It is a new season. Things will be different. You build on past experiences, but in a new season you learn new things. You become a different person.
3. New wine calls for new wineskin.
When a new season comes, change. You need a new wineskin.
So how do you do it?
Don’t resist. Don’t mix some of the new with some of the past. Change.
A) Meditate on it.
Confess, “I am a new wineskin.”
B) It is not going to be the same.
You will have to learn new things.
It won’t be comfortable.
Works mentality has to go.
Trust God. Step out.
When you are a new wineskin, you can be confident, when new challenges come, you can cope. You won’t burst. You were made for the new wine.
4. Stop drinking the old wine when the new comes along.
Some people think the old is good enough.
The old is just fine.
Were you made for just fine? Were you made for comfortable?
Whether you move into the new season is a choice. Some choose the new season, others do not.
There will be temptation to return to the old wine, and the old skin.
God wants to enlarge you.
Shed your skin. The old skin served you well, it is not who you are any more.
This is a new season. With new wine to drink. Time for a new you.
God, pour it out. I am ready. I am a new wineskin.
